Magnetic "Penetrating Sensors" for Hydrau-
lic Cylinders
The MB-F32 magnetic field sensor has a unique special feature. The
sensor enables one of the pistons to be detected through the wall of a
hydraulic cylinder. Once the piston passes over the sensor, the sensor
generates a switching signal.This special function means that the sensor
can be used to determine the position of the piston and also to count the
piston strokes.
Functional description of magnetic penetrating sensors
The MB-F32 sensor reacts sensitively to magnetic fields. It requires a
magnetic field change in order to change its switching state. In the exam-
ple below [Fig. 7], the magnetic pole shoe of the piston induces a partial
magnetic field in the steel cylinder wall. The sensor switches once the
partial magnetic field passes over it.
Mounting conditions of magnetic penetrating sensors
The MB-F32 magnetic field sensor is positioned externally on the steel
cylinder wall and secured using a tightening strap. To create a functional
system, a special pole shoe must be mounted to the piston inside the hy-
draulic cylinder.The shape and geometric dimensions of the pole shoe as
well as the size and number of magnets depends on the configuration of
