The automation of material handling systems requires information about
the moving vehicle or forklift truck that is accurate to the millimeter. The
position encoding systemWCS by Pepperl+Fuchs provides the operator
with a reliable and proven positioning system. The WCS combines two
important characteristics: noncontact technology and absolute position-
ing. You need just two components for positioning within your applica-
tion–the read head and the code rail.
The read head
The U-shaped read head is used for noncontact optical scanning of the
code rail. This enables the position encoding system to detect a new po-
sition value every 0.8 mm. Position values are determined regardless of
temperature fluctuations and in real time, even at high travel speeds. The
read heads have an internal light intensity regulation function.This allows
the position value to be determined accurately even in harsh ambient
conditions.
The mounting base is a special mechanical head support that enables
the read head to be installed quickly. No adjustments are necessary.
The data is transferred directly from the read head to the control unit via a
serial RS485, SSI, or CANopen interface. A wide range of interface mod-
ules are available for connecting to bus systems, such as PROFIBUS DP,
PROFINET RT, MODBUS/RTU, DeviceNet, or Interbus S.
The code rail
The code rail–which carries absolute path information–is positioned par-
allel to the travel path and assigns a clear and exactly reproducible posi-
tion at each point of the travel path. In addition to branches and curves, it
is also possible to install the code rail only where positioning is required.
Bracketry is available for quickly mounting the code rail, which is supplied
in stainless steel or laminated plastic.

Data Matrix positioning system PCV
The Data Matrix positioning system uses individual Data Matrix codes
arranged beside and above one another in the form of a code reel that
serves as an information carrier. The PCV read head uses modern cam-
era technology to detect codes two-dimensionally, which are then decod-
ed and finally output as an exact position in an X and Y direction.
The data bits of the Data Matrix code are divided into two dimensions and
provide a high degree of data density over a small surface area.
The PCV read head and the Data Matrix code reel together are suitable
for a wide range of positioning tasks in all applications. The unique code
reel is available in lengths of up to 10 km and is ideal for use in material
handling, the automotive industry, elevator technology, and general ma-
chine construction. Several Data Matrix code lines on the reel can also
be used to evaluate the vertical position. Benefit from the many years of

Monorail conveyor
The Data Matrix code reel is affixed directly above the power rails and
the PCV read head attached to the hanger. Each hanger is optimally po-
sitioned.
Skid conveyor
The simple attachment of the code reel and its insensitivity mean that
the PCV system is ideal for positioning skids, in shell constructions for
example.
